Great news! The Richland City Council unanimously approved the resolution to
accept $5,000 (source Columbia Center Rotary) for the initial 3-4 Share the Road
routes. Mayor Fox mentioned the importance of our project for the safety of cyclists
and the ongoing generosity of Columbia Center Rotary on this project and many
others that have benefited the City of Richland in the past and the importance of
maintaining this ongoing public/service club partnership. Council Member Ed Revell
added his appreciation for this project. We could not have achieved success without
the generosity of Columbia Center Rotary, the laying of groundwork by John Ittner,
Carl Berkowitz, and George Kyriazis, members of the Tri-City Bicycle Club; Phil
Pinard and Doug Strong, from the City of Richland Parks and Recreation Department;
and Steve Stairs, City of Richland Public Works, for his excellent presentation to the
Council this evening and support of our project. City Manager Cindy Johnson helped
the discussion stay on track when one of the Council Members was concerned that
the $5,000 would not cover the installation costs. In response, she assured the full
Council that the current budget would be sufficient to cover these costs.
I was very pleased with the questions around the need to eventually add excluded
shared routes to the Share the Road project in Richland. This provides me with
confidence that if we raise the additional funds, the City will allow this project to run
to completion. We can now also focus our effort on the next City to add to the
Program! Also, we will spend time at the next Board meeting to organize all of the
promotional activities in preparation for our Ribbon Cutting event after the initial
signs are installed. We will send all Advisory Council Members details about the
date, time, and location of this special event once this information is known.
Thank you to all of you for helping us reach the 3 Rivers Bicycle Coalition's first major
milestone!
